Rev. James Forbes, Jr.

“I believe that people who know the Declaration of Independence, one of the founding documents, must recognize that there was a spiritual sensibility there. What we want to avoid is having governments favor a religion that they like and, in sense, make it difficult for other religions.

I believe that what we must do is to always keep moral and spiritual principles before our government, not that we will curry favors from them, but that we will impact the direction of the policy in the direction of the common good, in the direction of peace and justice for us all.

That's a religious responsibility. It does not violate our Constitution.”

Welcome To Open Hearts and Minds Lectures Minimize

Who We Are

Open Hearts and Minds (OHM) Lectures is a local grassroots group of people of diverse interests and beliefs, originally organized to bring a speaker to Montgomery in 2002. That experience had a strong influence on our own lives and inspired us to bring others renowned in philosophy, religion, or contemporary issues to speak to our community.

We are a loosely organized group without official rules, officers, or dues, but we do have meetings to plan for guest speakers. Our unanimity is brought about by a common desire to put our mission into action.

Although we as individual OHM members may not necessarily endorse all the thoughts and concepts of our speakers, we believe having an Open Mind to hear diverse and well thought-out points of view is essential to our personal development and spiritual growth.. Also, we believe that having an Open Heart will stir us to greater compassion and lead us to work in building a better community.

If you'd like to challenge yourself and grow with us, please join us!
