Mini Conference Minimize

Saturday Morning; 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

The Saturday event will open with a welcome, introductions and some  framing remarks by Rita Brock on the subject of Greening the Soul.

Dr. Brock will be joined  by noted author James Douglass and local scholar Dr.Rosine Hall.

We invite you to explore the theme, Greening the Soul.  The Saturday conference will challenge us to confront the truths of how we live and what we know, relative to our own stories, among our sisters and brothers in community and in relationship to the gift of creation.

… a woman’s voice from the eleventh century speaks of a deep love for nature, in its beauty and its sometimes frightening power, and a basic sense that human life is a gift and rare opportunity… these values are profoundly biblical, as Hildegard knew…

-          Rita Brock, Setting the Table; Women in Theological Conversation

The first seed of the longing for Justice blows through the soul like the wind.  The taste for good will plays in it like a breeze.  The consummation of this seed is a greening in the soul that is like that of a ripening world.  Now the soul honors God by the doing of just deeds.  The soul is only as strong as its works.

- Hildegard of Bingen

April 28th 2007-Concurrent Workshops Minimize

Concurrent Workshops

1.  “Telling our Stories in Spirit and Truth; the greening of our souls
       with Dr. Rita Nakashima Brock

What sort of theology might emerge if a variety of individuals wrote it out of our experiences of life and of God?  How do we begin to find our own truth, trust the movement of life-spirit within, give birth to a vision of hope and lift a voice for transformation and healing to the world in which we live?  Dr. Brock will offer insight, encouragement and challenge to participants by way of examining the truth of what religious institutions have said alongside the truth of lived experience.  Guidelines and suggestions for shaping our own stories will be offered.

2.  “The Truth of Violence in Society; the Nonviolent Coming of God”
with James Douglass, St. Mary’s House, Birmingham, AL

How might the vision of the nonviolent coming of God shape our responses to the violence of poverty, oppression and a theology of fear?  James  Douglass will lead participants to hear a new understanding of our sacred and familiar claims of faith.

James Douglass is the author of a series of books.

3.  It’s Not Easy Being Green; the challenge of ecological concerns
     with Dr. Rosine Hall, AUM

What would a life-affirming and life-sustaining relationship with the gift of creation involve?  Is the natural world shaped simply as a mechanical instrument to be manipulated, worked on and controlled for human wasteful consumption?  Or is there a better way to shape our relationship with the earth and the waters that cover the face of the earth?  Dr. Rosine Hall will explore ecological issues and concerns and offer a challenge to her participants to “Go Green!”.

Dr. Rosine Hall is currently Associate Professor of Biology at Auburn Montgomery.

There is a $10.00 fee for Mini Conference.
